The Cactus Blossom’s have spent the two+ years writing and recording their new album. It was an honor to be asked to work with them again for some press photos to accompany the new album. Taking an afternoon in the Westbank neighborhood of Minneapolis – legendary for the bars where Bob Dylan got his start. We had a very casual shoot in bouncing between Palmer’s Bar, The alley behind The Wienery, and eventually getting up onto the roof of iconic The Cedar Cultural center.Read More
This was the fifth year in a row that I've photographed the Rock The Garden for The Current. It is aways a wonderful day outside in the summer sun, with a relaxed crowd and great music. Instead of the traditional location on the hill next to the Walker Art Center, construction in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden forced the festival to find a new location along the banks of the Mississippi in NE Minneapolis. The Boom Island park location was large enough to grow the festival to nearly 18,000 people with two opposing stages. Music jumped between the two stages with nearly no interruption. With an onsite photo editor, and a 2nd photographer, I was able to immediately deliver images to a Dropbox folder accessible to the social media team to post and share through the day. Three songs into each band's set, a card runner would take memory cards to the editor while I would continue to capture more images of the performers and crowd. By the end of they, 15,000 photos were already edited down to about 100 images ready for the recap of the event on The Current's website. With great music and summer weather it was another successful Rock The Garden.Read More
Last night First Avenue filled with a diverse crowd that was ready to dance and celebrate the release of Sonny Knight's new album – "I'm Still Here." I've been to a lot of CD release shows, but last night's was special for me as it was a celebration of Sonny's new full-length album, but it was also the official release of my first album cover.Read More
With all the projects I've done at The Current, it amazes me how many connections I've made and how intertwined those connections can be. Two years ago I met Lydia Hoglund who is an amazing vocalist in the band Bomba De Luz. Recently she has been working with rapper Toki Wright, doing backing vocals. When I heard they were putting on a show at the Triple Rock club last week, I sent her a quick note seeing if I might be able to come down to the show, and take some photos.Read More
After SXSW last month, I heard a lot about St Vincent and her more dramatic stage presence. So I was very excited to have a chance to photograph her show at the State Theater in Minneapolis last week. It was is strangely engaging, while she at times seemed totally cold, calculated and almost robotic, she would then just let loose and tease the audience with a hint of her personality. With almost no extra movement or emotion, St Vincent would unleash her incredible guitar chops, creating some fierce guitar sounds, even while standing stiffly in the center of the stage. Her robot shuffle around the stage felt totally odd until the strobe lights started, and transformed her walk from a weird waddle into perfect illusion floating across the stage. I worked to capture the purposely stiff facade, and contrast it with the intense musical crescendos, and moments of real emotion on stage.
