I returned to Soundset hip-hop festival this year for the first time in three years. 2009 was the first year the festival was held at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, MN and just like that year, this year was incredibly hot. Luckily, since that first year at Canterbury Park, they have moved the festival off the blisteringly hot parking lot, into a large field, big enough for two main stages, a side stage, B-boy/dj tent, skateboard competition, car show, graf-writer wall, and roughly 20,000 hip-hop fans. The whole show experience is a little overwhelming when first arriving but as you near the stages, the beats and the performances dominate the whole event. As the day drew on, and the heat of the day became sweltering, the Rhymesayers crew organizing the event set out to cool everyone off. Water-trucks with hoses appeared at a few different places around the festival grounds, spraying people down with some much appreciated cool water. The hillside bellow the one water station became saturated and turned into the ever-present muddy festival slip-n-slide. The energy filled day ended with a bang when the sky to the south grew dark grey and erupted with thunder, lighting, and pouring rain, just as Lupe Fiasco wrapped his set, drawing the day to an early end without headliner Atmosphere.
