Recently the Minnesota News Photographers Association held their annual conference. The day includes two regional and one national speaker, and a review of the award winning work from the annual competition. The day is always really inspiring, and renews my energy for photography and especially personal work.
I was proud to win one catagory in this year. This image won for top single sports photo of the year:
Mason De Keyrel, age 12 from White Bear Lake, MN, participates in an open track day at DCTC as a minnesota gopher leaps out of the way. July 29th, 2011.
I shot this at an open track day at the Dacota County Technical College sponsored by Ducati Minneapolis. I was there shooting behind the scenes photos for a small feature film. The film was shooting using the track riders as a race scene background. While photographing some of the track action, I made this frame. I did not even know I had captured the gopher's suicidal dash across the track until I found this frame as I edited the day's take. A lucky photo can only happen if you are in position to capture it.
