Author Marlon James gained fame a few years back after winning the Man Booker Prize for Fiction with his book A Brief History of Seven Killings. His newest book, Black Leapord, Red Wolf, has been described as an “African Game of Thrones” and is already a best seller.
On a cold Minnesota Sunday morning in December, I met Marlon at Macalester College to photograph him for a profile in Minnesota Monthly about the new book. I was given creative freedom from the photo editor at MNMO, being trusted to deliver a variety of great options. As I had researched ahead of the photo shoot, I was inspired by the bold colors of the book cover, and decided to use gels on my lights to recreate the dark saturated color.
I look forward to seeing where this story goes as it was just announced that Michael B. Jordan, lead actor from the movie Black Panther, has purchased rights to turn this book into its own feature film.
Marlon was generous with his time, and it was great to chat music and literature with him through the shoot.
