Last month Minnesota Alumni contacted me for a quick location portrait assignment of one of their notable alumni.
Patricia Columbus-Powers graduated from the U of M with a degree in engineering, is currently working on her M.B.A., and just started a high-end fashion line that draws on her Native American heritage and artistic traditions. I photographed Patricia inside and around her Saint Paul home. It was a little challenging as Patricia only had one prototype available to showcase in the photos. I worked with Patricia to arrange all her drawing and design supplies, some brand new leather she’d just purchased, and one of her finished design drawings on her coffee table. I shot wide variety of candid images as Patricia worked on a new drawing. With the afternoon sun getting a little lower, the light outside Patricia’s house began to turn nice and warm. The huge historic oak tree in Patricia’s front yard was a beautiful natural background in the heart of the city that tied in nicely with the natural elements of the designs.
While the magazine in the end did not use this last image, I loved the authentic, joyous moment here.
