For the last 15 years, the radio program Performance Today has traveled to the Aspen Music Festival and School to cover the concerts and interview performers. Performance Today is a nationally broadcast classical music radio program that is produced here in Saint Paul as part of American Public Media, the parent company of Minnesota Public Radio.
This year, I got to join the Performance Today team in Aspen to add a visual component to the digital experience of the show, creating portraits of musicians we interviewed, locations we visited, and documenting the concert that Performance Today presented at the festival. The show brought four acts to the Harris Hall stage, mixing visiting professionals and students.
It was difficult to try to capture the emotion of the solo performance and the fun interview with host Fred Child, while being conscious of the radio recording, and only taking 2-3 photos per performance during some of the loudest parts of each piece, and during applause.
Here are images of British violinist Daniel Hope, one of the featured professional artists.
