Growing up in Central Pennsylvania, it was easy to take for granted how great the area was for road biking. I spent most of my time biking the world class trails in the mountains a short drive from town, but the road biking in the area is just as phenomenal. The Penn State campus is at the center of town, but it is still amazing how quickly one can get out and into the country.
My first night back in town to see my parents, I decided to drive the scenic route home from dinner, cutting down a small road I've not driven in a few years. Driving down right at sunset, the light streamed across the road and I saw the landscape in a whole new fashion. This little stretch of road is less than two miles from the center of town, yet has several working barns lining each side.
With perfect weather forecast again the next day, I knew I had to pull together a small shoot along the stretch of road. Working with The Bicycle Shop Inc, I arranged to have two of their strongest young riders take out brand-new Specialized Roubaix demo bikes for the shoot. Madison Matthews was the mountain biking national champion in the 19-24 age category, and Brady Scott Ferster races for the Penn State collegiate cycling team.
We spent just an hour along the few miles of Branch Road, but I was really happy to capture the whole ride experience of what summer riding can be. It was a great shoot, and I had even more fun heading out for a long ride the next day with Brady, riding over some of the mountain ridges in the distance here.
