I'm a Minnesota-based photographer and film maker working primarily in Minneapolis. I capture editorial and commercial imagery with a journalistic approach, telling visual stories with integrity. As an avid cyclist and active outdoorsman, I love capturing the stories and environments of the natural world.
As the staff photographer at 89.3 The Current since 2010, I've captured photos and video of the countless studio performances with bands that visit the station, as well as many live performances at venues in Minneapolis and St. Paul.
I graduated from Carleton College with degrees in Studio Art and Geology. I love to bring my diverse experiences and knowledge to an assignment – whether it's film or video.

"I had an assignment in Minneapolis and Nate came very highly recommended by someone I’ve worked with, respect, and enjoy working with. From the start, Nate was simply a joy to work with. I knew I didn’t have to worry after our initial exchange. He followed the art direction well and on top of that gave me several more options. It was a bonus. He went beyond the call of duty. His images were incredibly beautiful. I am very happy we had this opportunity to work together and am looking forward to many more collaborations with him."
– Leslie Dela Vega (RollingStone Digital Photo Editor, now New York Times)
"My dear, kind, wonderful, silly, brilliant friend Nate Ryan took the most honest picture of me. He was able to capture my truth. I've never seen a picture that calmed me down and made me say, okay, yes, it's me. That's me. That's who I am. Striving to be the calm, proud, intelligent woman in that beautiful chair every day. Thank you Nate for bringing me closer to understanding myself, through your friendship and through these photos."
– Lydia Liza (Musician)
“We asked Nate to do a particularly challenging job - to help us tell personal and heartfelt stories from corporate employees at a 3-day conference hosted at a large and bland-looking convention center. Nate’s sensitivity through the lens to the interviewees and their stories imbued our video with a level of authenticity and honest, spontaneous testimony that is rare in corporate videos. His hand-held camera work featured little movements and zooms that were impeccably timed, and although subtle, created a greater connection between subject and viewer. He also employed creative problem-solving to stage the interviews in areas throughout the convention center that made the setting appear visually rich, while balancing the audio needs against a challenging, noisy backdrop. We couldn’t be more enthusiastic about the job that Nate and his team did!"
– Eli Cane (Normal Life Pictures. NY, NY)
"I have reviewed much of the footage from the shoot and you did a wonderful job. We have a ton of great stuff to work with! Thank you so much for your participation in this project."
